Previously, the prohibitive cost of radio surveys in regional areas (with the exception of Newcastle, Canberra and the Gold Coast that are surveyed as part of the master Radio Audience Measurement contract) has historically resulted in fewer surveys conducted in these areas.

Xtra Insights is the official provider of regional radio surveys, as of January 2016.

Radio Networks within a Licence Area (RA1) can commision one survey per calendar year, and depending on the sample size used, can gain audience figures for a range of demographic groups.

These surveys differ from those released in Metro and Major Regional markets. While GfK surveys report on share and TSL on account of the diarised method of collecting data, the regional survey is based on Station Most Listened rather than Share.
